During the world war years (second world war - lasting from 1939 to1945) luxurious femininity was almost forgotten. It was only after the war that the freeze melted and the rhythm of fashion burst out again in the work of many designers, of whom Christian Dior was only the most famous. "This year begins a new era and it follows as the peace the war, that men want women beautiful, romantic... Birds of paradise instead of hurrying brown hens," predicted Harper's Bazaar in October 1945... And exactly two years later, February 23, 1947 Christian Dior showed his first collection which he described as "Corolla" at 30 Avenue Montaigne. Botanical term described designers ideal of woman as woman-flower, after few costumes with rounded shoulders without padding, tight waists and wide skirts below the knee - everyone knew that Dior had created a "New look." This was real revolution in fashion. The term "New Look" to this collection at first was called by iconic editor of Harper's Bazaar - Mrs. Carmel Snow. Among the best-selling items in Dior's collection was "Le Bar" - I was lucky enough to see this great costume last March at
Le Bon Marché, where was held exihbition o
f monsieur Dior's creations from 1947-1997. (You can see my previous post about this exhibition in my archive). My favorite looks from 50's are Audrey Hepburn's portraits in "Roman Holiday"-1953 and "Funny Face"-1957 years.
On S/S-2012 catwalks there are a lots of collection inspired by 50's romantic mood. I have picked some of them, so you have a chance to look and be inspired for upcoming spring/summer season.

Christobal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain, Hebert de Givenchy, Jacques Fath...
